Caster Type
Full casters (Wizard, Cleric) get slots fastest. Half casters (Paladin, Ranger) progress at half speed. Third casters (Eldritch Knight) at one-third.
Slot Economy
Higher-level slots are scarce. A 20th-level caster only gets one 9th-level slot, but four 1st-level slots. Plan your big spells carefully.
Recovery Mechanics
Warlocks recover on short rests. Wizards have Arcane Recovery. Druids get Natural Recovery. These features dramatically change slot management.
Multiclass Math
Multiclass slots combine using effective caster level—not individual class progressions. Warlocks use Pact Magic separately.
What Most Spell Slot Calculators Don't Explain
Warlock Multiclass Slots Stay Separate
A Warlock 5/Wizard 5 doesn't combine their slots. You have your Wizard slots (from being a 5th-level caster) AND your Warlock Pact Magic slots (two 3rd-level slots that recharge on short rest). You can use either to cast spells from either class, but they recover differently.
Artificer Rounds Up (Everyone Else Rounds Down)
When calculating multiclass spell slots, Paladins and Rangers divide their level by 2 and round down. A level 3 Paladin contributes 1 to caster level. But Artificers round up—a level 1 Artificer contributes 1, not 0. This matters significantly at low levels.
Ability Scores Don't Grant Extra Slots
Unlike older editions, 5e spell slots come purely from class levels. Having 20 Intelligence doesn't give you extra Wizard slots. Your spellcasting ability affects how many spells you can prepare, your spell save DC, and your spell attack bonus—but not slot quantity.
Arcane Recovery Has a Level Cap
Wizards can recover spell slots equal to half their level, but you cannot recover 6th-level slots or higher. Even a 20th-level Wizard using Arcane Recovery is limited to recovering 5th-level slots at maximum.

Warlock Spell Slots (Pact Magic)
Warlocks use Pact Magic instead of regular spellcasting. They have fewer slots, but all slots are cast at their maximum level and recover on short rests.

Pro tip: In a typical adventuring day with 2-3 short rests, a Warlock effectively has 6-12 spell slots compared to other casters' fixed pool. This makes Warlocks excellent at sustained combat encounters.
Spell Slots by Class in DnD 5e
Wizard Spell Slots
Wizards are full casters with the largest spell selection. They gain Arcane Recovery at level 1, allowing them to recover spell slots during short rests once per day.
- • Level 1: 2 slots (1st level)
- • Level 5: 9 slots (up to 3rd level)
- • Level 20: 22 slots (up to 9th level)
Cleric Spell Slots
Clerics are full casters with domain spells always prepared. Channel Divinity abilities don't consume spell slots.

Druid Spell Slots
Druids are full casters who can Wild Shape. Circle of the Land Druids gain Natural Recovery, similar to Wizard's Arcane Recovery.

Sorcerer Spell Slots
Sorcerers can convert spell slots to Sorcery Points and vice versa using Flexible Casting.

Bard Spell Slots
Bards are full casters with Bardic Inspiration dice separate from spell slots.

Paladin Spell Slots
Paladins are half casters who gain spellcasting at level 2. Divine Smite consumes spell slots for extra radiant damage.

Ranger Spell Slots
Rangers are half casters gaining spellcasting at level 2. Many Ranger spells are concentration.

Artificer Spell Slots
Artificers are half casters that round UP for multiclass calculations (unique among half casters).

DnD 5e Multiclass Spell Slots Explained
Multiclassing spellcasters in 5e combines your levels to determine total spell slots, but you calculate spells known/prepared for each class separately. Here's exactly how it works:
Calculating Multiclass Caster Level
- 1. Add Full Caster Levels: Bard, Cleric, Druid, Sorcerer, Wizard levels count fully.
- 2. Add Half Caster Levels ÷ 2: Paladin and Ranger levels divided by 2, rounded down. Artificer levels divided by 2, rounded up.
- 3. Add Third Caster Levels ÷ 3: Eldritch Knight and Arcane Trickster levels divided by 3, rounded down.
- 4. Ignore Warlock Levels: Warlock uses Pact Magic separately and doesn't combine.
- 5. Check the Table: Use your total caster level with the full caster spell slot table.
Multiclass Example: Paladin 6/Sorcerer 4
- • Paladin 6: Half caster, contributes 3 levels (6 ÷ 2 = 3)
- • Sorcerer 4: Full caster, contributes 4 levels
- • Total Caster Level: 7
- • Spell Slots: 4/3/3/1 (four 1st, three 2nd, three 3rd, one 4th)
Note: You can only prepare Paladin spells up to 2nd level and Sorcerer spells up to 2nd level based on individual class levels, but you can cast them using any of your combined slots.
